Default All About Herbicides

It's getting closer to spring and herbicides will be on many landowners minds...which ones to use, which ones are effective and those not so much.

Which ones may not be labeled for a crop or plant but yet have been used safely and effectively by those brave enough to give it a try?!

I have a thread containing a very long list of herbcides and labels that can be helpful for those with questions (that includes most of us! )

All About Herbicides

There is all kinds of info including links to calibrating sprayers, pricing, sources and more so the thread can be a source of helpful information to almost everyone.

If you find a broken link...please report it to me and I'll repair it and if you have a new herbicide you think should be added, a link to good information on spraying and applying herbicides or good online sources...please let me know!

This thread will be a good place to ask questions about herbicides or spotlight your favorite.

While I prefer to use natural weed control whenever possible, some crops are nearly impossible to grow without weed control via herbicides so check out the thread and share and comments, questions or thoughts on herbicides...

Thanks Lickcreek for the opening of another great thread!

Can you clarify about RUP. If I'm in Michigan and I obtain some Atrazine from my Pheasants Forever mentor/neighbor/friend is it OK for me to spray it without him supervising?

I have an infestation of Yellow Rocket in my August 2009 clover plot. I'm going to have some Butyrac on hand but I'm not sure whether I'm going to spray or flail mow first. Like any farmer, I think I'll have to make decisions on the fly. My plot doesn't dry enough to drive the tractor on it until the third week of may. BTW your Butyrac label link is dead at OO.

I believe it's fine but that's one of those things that falls in the "don't ask don't tell" category. I'm studying for my RUP right now so I'll eventually be able to give a qualified answer, so far there is nothing in the study materials that says I can't apply herbicides purchased by someone with a license...

I'll fix the link...thanks!!

LC or others, can you comment on TripleStrike grass and weed killer compared to gly?

Here is what the label shows:

Diquat dibromide: 2.3%
Fluazifop-p-butyl: .75%
Dicamba, Dimethylamine salt: .51%

I didn't see it mentioned in your thread. My local Lowe's has it on clearance for $6 per 1/2 gallon of concentrate.

I'm newer to plotting and have approximately 2 acres that I sprayed and tilled under last year. Was planning on using this to hit this springs green up and turn over a couple weeks later.

Is this stuff any good? Should I mix w/ gly? Use stand alone? Or just dump it and use the gly? The price seemed too good to pass up, so I picked up 3 bottles.

I have not used it so the only cation I would have is to check and make sure there are no residual effects...in otherwords is there a time frame between spraying and when you can plant again?

Glyphosate is very safe but I can't say for certain regarding this product?

Thanks LC - the label claims the treated area can be planted in one day, so I'll give it a shot stand alone and I'll mix some with gly and report back.

I mention Dual Magnum II pre-emergence herbicide now and then because it is a non-restricted herbicide and is safe on a wide variety of crops and provides very effective foxtail control.

There are generic versions of course but make sure they all contain S-metolachlor and not just metolachlor because while one may be cheaper, it must be applied at higher rates thus negating the cost savings.

Quote:
DUAL II Magnum herbicide provides selective weed control in:
Corn * (hybrid, silage, seed, sweet)
Soybeans
Sorghum (if treated with Concep)
Dry common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)
Snap common beans (yellow and green)
Lima beans
Potatoes
Sugar beets
Sunflowers
Transplanted tomatoes
Rutabagas (brassicas)
Sweet white lupins
Peas (grown for processing)
Fruit trees (bearing and non-bearing)
Second-year or older poplar stoolbeds
Second-year or older transplant or seedling stock of:
White Spruce, Norway Spruce, Black Spruce, White Pine, Jack Pine and Red Pine
Transplanted broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower
Newly planted strawberries

Dual Magnum II information

Dual Magnum II herbicide label

Sorghum and switchgrass seed can be "safened" with Concep and then Dual is safe to use on those crops. Sorghum (milo) can usually be purchased pre-treated so be sure to ask...

CONCEP SEED SAFENER

Cinch is just one generic version that does contain S-metolachlor and there are links to that and understanding why all metolachlor's are not created equal in my thread on herbicides.

All about herbicides

Knowledge is everything and that thread is meant to give landowners knowledge about a wide array of herbicide options including generic options.

If you have been successful with a herbicide not listed in that thread, please post it here and I will add it and make me aware of any broken links in the thread.

Companies change (update) their labels often and that changes the link every now and then...
