I don't think it is a burr. The head is soft and no stickers...

What is that stuff? I am pretty sure it is not the same though. It looks way to tall and the head appears to come from a central stalk. My mystery plant is very low lying and the heads branch out new stalks forming new heads from the head node. The plant has several sporatic nodes..

I read the discription for Appalachian sedge which says it is a dry woodland plant and from the pics I looked at doesnt appear to have nodes. My plant thrives in the exact opposite... water!

The picture is Michaux's Sedge. Both with will grow in wetlands. Either way one of the sedges is most likely your "mystery plant".

I think criggster's possible solution was best. Get some sedgehammer and see if it kills it - if it does - it's some kind of sedge.

I have poured out a bunch of round up, and criggster is right, sedge comes RR.
